Two held on $1 million bonds in Saturday shooting

A Saturday night shooting around the Interstate 95 area of Roanoke Rapids ended with the arrests of two men who are each jailed on $1 million bonds.

Roanoke Rapids police charged Keyon West, 18, and Motique Jackson, 20, with multiple counts related to an approximately 11:30 p.m. shooting in which multiple shots were fired in the area of the Interstate BP.

While police declined to discuss motive this evening, one person who was getting into a vehicle had bullets fired his way but was not injured. A second victim was also identified throughout the course of the investigation, police said.

Bullets from small-caliber handguns hit the pavement and struck the store.

Chief Thomas Hathaway said an officer was in the area at the time of the shooting and he reportedly saw the suspect vehicle take off. The officer gave chase and stopped the vehicle at Valley Community Church near Halifax Community College.

The two men were apprehended with assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff's and handguns and a small amount of marijuana was seized.

West, who lists a Collins Avenue address in Roanoke Rapids and Jackson, who lists a Williams Street Roanoke Rapids address, each face two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, one count each of felony flee to elude arrest, resist, delay and obstruct and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Additional warrants of injury to personal property and going armed to the terror of the public were drawn up today and will be served to them Wednesday.

Separately, Jackson was charged with possession of schedule VI and West was charged with ID theft for giving officers fictitious information.

In addition, West was given 60 days for contempt for language and behavior in front of a magistrate.

 

 

 

The men have November 13 court dates.
