They include pre-Halloween activities as well as several organized trunk or treat activities, some that are being coordinated or sponsored by local law enforcement. All events are October 31 unless otherwise noted.

Halifax County Sheriff's Office

The sheriff's office is sponsoring a trunk or treat in the courthouse parking lot in Halifax from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “The program,” according to Sheriff Wes Tripp, “will provide a safe environment for parents and children to participate in the tradition of Halloween.”

Tripp encourages community participation from residents to anyone who wants to provide treats for the event.

Residents, businesses and civic organizations are encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-583-8201 for more information or to find out how to participate in any capacity.

Deputies will be present as treats are given out by residents and organizations.

Roanoke Rapids

The city will be kicking off celebrations early with the haunted trail walk on October 24 and 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Roanoke Canal Museum.

This is an event recommended for ages 12 and up and admission is $3 per person.

On October 28 at the T.J. Davis Recreation Center there will be pumpkin carving, crafts and snacks from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 6 and up. Fee is $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents. Participants are asked to bring a clean pumpkin.

On Halloween night, there will be a carnival and haunted house at the T.J. Davis Recreation Center from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The carnival, which is sponsored by the Roanoke Rapids Optimist Club, is free for children under 12 and $2 for children 12 and older. Participants are encouraged to dress in their best costumes and bring bags to collect treats.

Trick-or-treating in Roanoke Rapids will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., police Chief Thomas Hathaway said.

The chief recommends to follow safety rules such as wearing reflective clothing, carry flashlights and having adults check candy before eating.

Trick-or-treaters should watch for vehicles and motorists should be on the lookout as well.

Weldon

The Weldon Police Department will be participating in two events on Halloween, according to Chief Mark Macon and Captain James Avens.

While trick-or-treating is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., both Macon and Avens are encouraging parents and children to participate in either the Valley Community Church trunk or treat event that begins at 6 p.m. or the Weldon Elementary School-First Baptist Church trunk or treat event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event at Valley Community, where Lieutenant Chris Davis will be assisting, will be held rain or shine.

Avens said the Weldon Elementary School event also includes a movie. “It's about safety and an organized event that brings the church, schools and police together to give the kids something positive to do and a place to go.”
