A passenger in a Federal Express tractor-trailer died this morning after being ejected following a blow-out, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Trooper A.A. Lucas said at the scene the rig, carrying packages, blew a tire around 5 a.m. in the northbound lane of Interstate 95, just past the 165 ½ mile marker. The scene of the crash is about 8 miles outside Roanoke Rapids.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road to the right where it collided with a tree that was down an embankment, ejecting the passenger.

The passenger died and the driver was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

FedEx employees were notified and packages were being placed into another trailer as of this report.

Names were being withheld until the completion of the investigation and notification of next of kin.
