A call about a possible impaired driver led the Halifax County Sheriff's Office today to seize a total of 59 bindles of heroin from a man and his girlfriend.

Shortly before 1 p.m., according to Lieutenant Anzell Harris, central communications received a call about a possible intoxicated driver at the Halifax Supermarket in Halifax.

Lieutenant Doug Pilgreen and Sergeant A. Pittman responded to the call, coming into contact with Henry Eugene Clay Jr. 28, of Weldon, and his girlfriend, Kaitlin Nicole Kirk, 22, of Chesterfield, Virginia.

Harris said Pilgreen suspected the couple were allegedly under the influence of drugs and requested a narcotics agent to assist.

Narcotics Agent S.G. Page and other deputies arrived to assist.

A warrant check on Clay led officers to discover he was wanted out of Virginia for grand larceny while a canine search by Deputy J. Keeter and his dog Brody allegedly alerted to narcotics.

Kirk allegedly had a brick, or 50 bindles of heroin, on her and an additional search of Clay allegedly led to the discovery of nine bindles.

A brick is worth approximately $300, Harris said, and it is suspected the heroin was destined for sale in the area.

Page charged Clay with trafficking heroin and possession of a controlled substance at a jail or prison. He was additionally served the Virginia fugitive warrant. He was given a $12,500 bond for the trafficking count and no opportunity for bond on the fugitive warrant.

Kirk was charged with trafficking heroin and given a $1,500 secured bond.

They have December 4 court dates.
