Investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Chad Thomas Griffin, 39, of Clayton, according to Detective Harold Phillips of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Griffin was arrested by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office Friday after Halifax completed its investigation.

Griffin faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault inflicting serious injury.

Events that led to the assault and shooting began when Griffin allegedly began shooting fireworks and the victim asked him to stop.

Griffin, who was at a Halifax area hunting club, reportedly physically assaulted the victim. About an hour later, as the victim was preparing to leave the hunting club, Griffin allegedly approached him and shot him in the upper right leg with a .40-caliber handgun. Alcohol use was a contributing factor, Phillips said.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Halifax Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to WakeMed in Raleigh. The victim has been released and continues to recover.

Griffin was jailed on $51,000 bond and has a February 12 court date.
