Already streamlining the process for permits to buy handguns, on January 22 the Halifax County Sheriff's Office will begin the second installment to include the application for a concealed weapons permit online.

“Since taking office of sheriff, I have initiated a more timely and convenient process of obtaining a concealed carry permit. I initially made applications available to the public at post offices, libraries, and municipal buildings in order for pre-filled applications to save time spent at the sheriff’s office by applicants,” Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement.

Tripp said further efforts have resulted in reallocating resources to stream-line the process of obtaining concealed weapon permits and permits to purchase firearms. “In most cases citizens can now expect to schedule appointments within one week of completing a concealed carry class.”

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office began the first installment, regarding the new system of the issuance of pistol permits.

January 22 begins the second installment, which will include the new carry concealed weapon process. This new system will speed up the process and save time for applicants, Tripp said.

Halifax County citizens can visit one of three websites — www.halifaxsheriff.com, www.halifaxnc.com, or halifaxso.permitium.com — to link to the new and improved permit application. “The applicant can complete the application process during their time anywhere that they have access to the Internet,” Tripp said. “The website is very user friendly and secure with the capability to pay online with a major credit or debit card.”

Once the application is submitted, the applicant will receive an email, text message, or both, in regard to their application process. “This new and improved process will reduce the time that an applicant will need to take from work as it will be more convenient and accessible. This is a new and improved method for the citizens of Halifax County and I encourage all citizens that are eligible and interested in learning more about our pistol permit program to visit the websites or call the sheriff’s office.”

Tripp said those not familiar with the Internet or the process should not worry as a computer and trained personnel will be available to assist them. “I want a better process for all of our applicants and we’re committed to providing a fast and convenient service. The sheriff’s office is also willing to meet with any of the local carry concealed weapon instructors to answer any questions and demonstrate the process to better prepare them for any questions that may arise to them.”

Instructors can call Tripp or Major Scott Hall at 252-583-8201 for further information.

“This is nothing but an improvement,” Tripp said this evening. “We're getting good comments.”
