Incumbent Halifax County Commissioner Vernon Bryant this evening announced his intention to file for his at-large seat in the May 6 Democratic Primary.

He will do so on February 10.

“During my first term, my focus was and continues to be about jobs, education, public safety and senior citizens. I will also continue to be a strong advocate for maintaining property tax rates as low as possible,” he said in a statement.

He is a 1975 graduate of Weldon High School and a 1979 graduate of Fayetteville State University with a bachelor of science degree in intermediate education and a minor in history. He also completed the North Carolina Department of Correction Leadership Development Program in 2001.

Bryant was employed by the State of North Carolina for 30 years and retired in 2009 as Community Corrections Manager. He was nominated twice for the North Carolina Department of Correction Dr. John R. Larkins Human Service Award. “At the conclusion of my tenure, I was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine and The Old North State Award for exemplary service to the State of North Carolina.”

Said Bryant: “I demonstrated commitment and service to the community for more than 35 years. I served on many state and local boards including Past Chairman of the Halifax Regional Medical Center Board of Directors, the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Education for 13 years and served as Chairman for five of those years.”

He is married to the former Sandra Walden. He and his wife are the parents of two adult children, Kendel and Kevin. His mother-in-law is Mrs. Arizona McNair Putney of Roanoke Rapids and his older brother is the late Reverend Eugene Bryant who also served as a pastor and Halifax County Commissioner until his untimely death in 2002.

“My philosophy is 'if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.'”

Bryant is maintaining a Facebook page for his candidacy.
