Scott told commissioners county officials met with the company January 21, the day it officially announced it would close by the end of June.
She said the North Carolina Rapid Response Team, a part of the state Department of Commerce, met with the company last week to determine how it could best help the 122 people who will lose their jobs as the company prepares to close.
The county will also begin to market the building for new job creation and investment, she said. “It represents a tremendous opportunity to market the building being a half-mile from the interstate. There's quite an amount of interest in this building that we have not had in a while.”
Meanwhile, Scott said the recent purchase of the Interstate Inn in Weldon opens up a new commercial marketing endeavor. It is a 14-acre site located just off the interstate.
She said the new owners are looking at demolishing the hotel. “They're looking at it for commercial development. It's probably not attractive as a hotel site anymore.”
