A march to bring awareness to civil rights issues in Halifax County is planned for April 5.

According to a copy of the permit, which the Roanoke Rapids Police Department has approved, the march will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will start at Interstate 95 and go down Julian R. Allsbrook Highway to Virginia Avenue, where it ends at the Martin Luther King statue near Chaloner Middle School.

David Harvey, president of the Halifax County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, applied for the permit and anticipates anywhere from 600 to 1,000 people to participate, the permit states.

The purpose, according to the application, “Is to bring awareness to civil rights issues we have in Halifax County regarding Roanoke Rapids Graded School District boundaries.”

Harvey was in a meeting earlier today and could not comment. He could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Thomas Hathaway said the police department has approved the application and will allocate manpower to the march. Weldon must also approve the application as well as the state Department of Transportation.

Hathaway said Harvey has supplied information to DOT.
