Major Scott Hall said around 9 p.m. Deputy Graham Page tried to stop a Mercury sport utility vehicle for speeding at the Highway 158 and Washington Avenue intersection in Weldon.

Page activated blue lights and siren in an effort to stop the vehicle that was reportedly being driven by Stephen Clanton, 37.

Page followed the vehicle to Laurel Lane in Weldon and then back to Highway 158 with assistance from Weldon Police Department Lieutenant Chris Davis.

Speeds reached up to 90 miles per hour, Hall said, as the chase went into Roanoke Rapids and Lincoln Street in the Lincoln Heights community where Clanton stopped and ditched the vehicle.

Sheriff's Office Narcotics Agent Cody Dickens and Page captured Clanton after a brief foot chase.

Clanton faces charges of felony speed to elude arrest; DWI; careless and reckless driving; resist arrest; drive left of center and driving with a revoked license.

He was jailed on $15,000 secured bond and assigned a May 21 court date.
