An 18-year-old has been arrested for setting two vehicles on fire late Sunday night.

A third vehicle sustained heat damage from one of the fires.

The counts filed against Brandon Michael Williams reflect charges related to a fire that totaled a 1999 Dodge Durango in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street, as well as a fire that totaled a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo in the same block, Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Andy Jackson said.

Williams, of Pine Drive, faces charges of underaged consumption of alcohol, possession of alcohol by a minor, two felony burning of personal property counts, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and one count of larceny after breaking and entering. He allegedly took money from the Aveo. He was jailed on $10,000 bond and has an August 27 court date.

Jackson said Officer Gerald Morris was flagged down shortly before 11:45 Sunday night and informed a vehicle had been set on fire near Eleventh and Jefferson streets.

Officer Roy Ball responded and blocked off the area at 1102 Jefferson Street after witnessing the Dodge Durango, which was engulfed in flames.

A 2014 Dodge Ram pickup sustained $1,000 in damages from the radiant hear of the Durango fire, Lieutenant Tim Gray of the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department said.

Gray said firefighters contained the fire in about three to five minutes. He said the SUV burned from one end to the other and the fire entered the engine compartment. Firefighters heard tires popping upon arrival.

Jackson said the fire was started in the glovebox. A motive is not known and it is believed that Williams did not know the victims in the case. He said he could not sure whether the alcohol use played a part in the matter.
