A Hobgood man died early this morning in a single-vehicle wreck on Highway 97.

According to an initial report by Trooper D.P. Efird of the state Highway Patrol, Thomas Winborne, 44, was traveling east on the highway in the Hobgood area shortly after 2:15 a.m.

His vehicle went off the road to the left and he overcorrected, which caused the car to go off the road to the right. The vehicle struck an embankment, causing it to roll over and strike a tree on the passenger side.

The report notes that Winborne was not wearing a seat belt. Contributing factors include overcorrection and inattention, according to the report.

This marks the seventh driving fatality this year. At this time last year there had been 12.
