Public Health Matters: No place like home

When I think about the phrase “There’s No Place Like Home,” as a child, my first thought was the character Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz book and movie.

I can remember Dorothy being swept away to the magical land of Oz and simply wanting to be home with her family. As an adult, I have a different thought of this famous phrase, the importance of home health and hospice.

November is Home and Hospice Care Month.

Each year November is set aside to honor those who attend to the in-home health and hospice care needs of the citizens in the comfort and privacy of their homes.

You may wonder what exactly is home care and hospice. Home care describes a wide variety of health and health-related services provided at home to sustain, maintain, or restore an individual’s health and well-being.

Home Health services are not just for the elderly.

Home Health services are available for all ages and medical situations.

Hospice is a special way of caring for individuals who are in the final stage of their lives due to a terminal illness which focuses on comfort care and symptom management. HCPHS Home Health and Hospice has provided home health services for 45 years and Hospice services for over 30 years.

Our agency is the only non-profit Home Health and Hospice agency in the Roanoke Valley.

We are proud to provide services to our community, including skilled nursing, medical social work, physical therapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, respite care, in-home aide care services, bereavement counseling, volunteer services, pain management and quality, end-of-life care. HCPHS Home Health and Hospice compassionately provides care for patients and their families every day.

Through home health and hospice, our patients can receive care at home, where they can have the comfort, autonomy, and security they deserve. In addition, home health and hospice helps family members and friends every step of the way by teaching them how to provide care and by supporting them through this journey. As Health Director of Halifax County, I salute our home health and hospice staff. Having had a loved one who needed home health then later hospice services, I know firsthand the benefits of such programs. “There is Truly No Place Like Home Health and Hospice of Halifax County.”
