Weldon Fire Chief Rusty Bolt said the house is repairable but there was probably more damage than the structure at 315 Ransome Circle is worth.
The fire department received the call shortly before 2 p.m. and found fire coming out of the roof vents in three places, Bolt said.
No one was injured and the owner said she heard a popping sound. She was awakened from a nap and found smoke in the house.
Firefighters attacked the blaze from the ceiling in the kitchen. They had the fire contained within 20 minutes with assistance from the Halifax Fire Department.
Damage was contained to the den, attic and kitchen. Belongings received smoke damage and the Red Cross was notified to assist with lodging and other needs.
Bolt said the fire most likely originated in the den area. He said the cause of the fire is undetermined but could possibly be electrical.
