In a meeting dominated by rezoning requests, Roanoke Rapids City Council approved two and tabled one.

Council this evening unanimously approved a rezoning request for the State Employee's Credit Union and one for Flatiron Partners LLC.

The SECU approval came with a change proffered by Councilman Carl Ferebee, that the 4.5 acres of land off Tenth Street be zoned B-2 rather than B-4.

Ferebee's contention was that the B-2 zoning is narrower in the uses allowed in the B-4 but still includes banks with a drive-through as a use.

SECU officials confirmed following last month's planning board meeting they hope to build a second branch at the location.

The Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools District board of education approved the sale of the land on the former Patterson Mill site to SECU in November for $747,000.

Council also approved the the Flatiron Partners request for slightly more than 6 acres of land behind Drugco west of Smith Church Road for a 72-unit multi-family housing development consisting of one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

The city's governing panel delayed the rezoning request of Weaver-Kirkland Housing LLC and MK Properties LLC to rezone approximately 10 acres of land at the end of West Becker Drive Extension to accommodate a multi-family housing unit.

The development, which would be called River Towne Villas, is adjacent to the completed River Town Manor, a complex for seniors.

River Towne Villas is proposed to be an 80-unit development with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units with a clubhouse and on-site amenities such as a playground, covered picnic area with tables and grills as well as a gazebo. The units will be priced from the middle $400 to the middle $700 range.

Council had concerns about storm water capacities in an area that has historically been prone to flooding.

Councilman Ernest Bobbitt made the motion to table the matter until council's next meeting in two weeks.
