A Roanoke Rapids man with a previous record for narcotics sales was arrested this evening during a state Highway Patrol checking station.

The City County Drug Task Force charged Marc Anthony Solomon-Cartagena, 25, with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine; felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Task force Lieutenant H.G. Phillips said the arrest was made during a checking station on County Road near Wallace Fork Road around 8 p.m..

Highway Patrol Sergeant R.W. Goswick contacted the task force after he and troopers L. Bynum and K. Rizzuto observed a vehicle trying to avoid the checking station. Once contact was made the troopers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle Solomon-Cartagena was operating.

During a probable cause search, Phillips located a clear plastic bag containing seven crack rocks on the floorboard.

Solomon-Cartagena was jailed on $15,000 bond and given an April 22 court date.
