Dashawn Hendricks will spend at least 20 years in prison for the 2013 murder of Sequon Starks.

District Attorney Valerie Asbell said in a statement that on Monday the case of the State of North Carolina versus Hendricks was called for trial in Halifax County Criminal Superior Court. Upon being called for trial in front of a jury, Hendricks pled guilty to second-degree murder, receiving a 240- to 300-month prison sentence imposed by Judge Milton Fitch.

Asbell said in the statement that under North Carolina's Structured Sentencing Laws, Hendricks will spend a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of 25 years.

Hendricks, 18, was represented by Jamal Summey of Scotland Neck. The State of North Carolina was represented by Assistant District Attorney Norlan Graves, who called the case for trial.

Starks was shot by Hendricks, 16 at the time, on October, 13, 2013, in Weldon at an after-hours night club at around 3 a.m.

“Tt appeared that the motive in the case was linked to a family dispute,” Graves said in the statement.

Said Asbell: “These trials are very difficult for the family of the victims and I am glad that there is some closure in the court process for the family of Mr. Starks. We will continue to pray for Mr. Starks’ family during this process. I want to thank Assistant District Attorney Norlan Graves for his diligent effort in preparing this case for trial. I also want to commend Sheriff Wes Tripp and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office for their professionalism and excellent investigation during this case.”
