A scam in which an elderly woman in the Roanoke Rapids area lost more than $1,000 was reported this week, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

The woman received a call from a young man acting as her grandson who told her he was in immediate need of money because he had been in a car crash and needed money to pay his attorney for the injured.

The phone was passed over to someone purporting to be an attorney from Lynchburg, Virginia, who requested the money be sent to Puerto Rico.

The money was wired through a MoneyGram, Sheriff Wes Tripp said.

Tripp advises the following when getting a call asking for money:

Ask a lot of questions about their company or cause.

Ask the caller to send the information to you in writing.

Explain to the caller that you need to call your local law enforcement agency and have them assist you in the matter.

Be careful and mindful of giving personal information over the phone.

Never hesitate to call the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office or your local police concerning possible scams.
