Country Jam to help build veterans retreat

Country singer Colton James and American Builder Brian Gurry have a common bond — a love of country and a respect for the men and women who protect it.

The completion of terminating the city’s original bond package which led to the construction of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre is expected to fill a nearly $400,000 gap of a loss in privilege license fees taken away by the state.

The North Carolina Local Government Commission today unanimously approved the city’s proposal to restructure the debt of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre.

In a move demonstrating an underlying confidence the theater will eventually be sold, Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening agreed to send a refinancing proposal to the Local Government Commission which could represent substantial savings over what it currently pays on the venue’s debt.

The city will go before the Local Government Commission next month with a resolution which is the first formal step in reducing its current debt on the Roanoke Rapids Theatre.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band celebrated 50 years in the music business tour with a stop in the Roanoke Valley Saturday night.

The city is expected to enter formal negotiations later this week to restructure its current debt on the Roanoke Rapids Theatre which, if successful, will significantly reduce its payments on the venue.
