Michael Strickland has been named the new operations director for Halifax County and will resume the role the first of the new year.

His promotion comes after Ed Johnson retired after more than 42 years of service.

The county said a thorough recruitment and interview process was conducted to find Johnson’s replacement.

Strickland, born and raised in Halifax County and a graduate of Weldon High School, has been working for the county’s Operations Department for 33 years, most recently in the capacity of operations manager.

In addition to his hands-on experience with county facilities and staff, Strickland has training in electrical maintenance and safety, hazmat, bloodborne pathogens, confined spaces, lockout/tagout, underground gas storage tanks, chemical safety, construction safety, OSHA regulations, and more.

“I truly appreciate this wonderful opportunity and look forward to joining Halifax County’s dedicated team of department heads,” said Strickland.

County Manager Dia Denton said, “I’m looking forward to working with Michael in his new role. He has spent his entire career with Halifax County and knows county facilities better than anyone. He is well-prepared for this new challenge.”

Strickland currently resides near Halifax with his wife of 30 years, Shelly, and some favorite four-legged, furry friends.

Their daughter Jordan, 24, resides in Raleigh.

His parents are Randy and JoAnn Strickland.
