A Roanoke Rapids man was served with felony warrants as well as driving and weapon charges following a stop Thursday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Major Anzell Harris said Deputy D. Bybee stopped James W. Johnston, 34, around 4 p.m. near Highway 158 and Airport Road for a traffic violation.

Johnston had outstanding felony warrants for breaking and entering and larceny after breaking.

Those warrants allege that Johnston broke into a storage building owned by Halifax County Schools on Everetts School Road and took copper and three touchscreens with a total value of $9,830.

Bybee also confirmed that Johnston’s driver’s license was suspended and that he was unable to provide proof of insurance. The license tag on the vehicle had been reported lost or stolen.

In addition to those violations, Bybee located a J.G. bolt-action rifle in the vehicle, which the warrant describes as an antique weapon.

According to the warrant, Johnston had previously been convicted of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance in October 2023 and was sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation.

Johnston was denied bail and has an August 28 district court date.
