The KIPP Pride Panthers and Southern Vance Raiders both came into Friday’s game looking to avenge recent losses.
However, it was the Panthers who took early control in the game, getting off to a quick 16-3 lead in the first five minutes.
The game proved to be one that was controlled by momentum, as it was a critical fourth quarter run that propelled the Panthers to a 68-56 victory.
The Panthers were sparked by the play of Jerry Royster and Jordan Sheppard.
Royster established his dominance in the paint early, scoring early inside for 13 first quarter points. Royster also showcased his range by knocking down three 3-pointers and hitting mid-range jump shots, totalling 35 points while adding 18 rebounds.
Sheppard added an aggressive spark as he drove fearlessly against the Southern Vance defense en route to a 17-point performance.
The intensity carried over to the defensive side as well as Jordan pickpocketed players twice for easy layups, and kept his teammates energized on the defensive end.
For the Southern Vance Raiders, Kean Branch did his best to keep his team in the game.
Kean played a physical, assertive game, willing his way to the hole when the Raiders needed it the most.
He and Al-Kabir Williams both helped to ignite late second and third quarters, attempting to remain aggressive and provide the Raiders with energy.
Late in the game, Panthers were able to withhold against the runs and keep their composure as the Raiders cut the lead to 52-51 in the fourth quarter.
A pivotal downfall for Southern Vance was fouls. While KIPP missed 12 free-throws in the first half, they were able to capitalize down the stretch and extend the lead to seal the game.
The varsity girl Panthers fell in a Heartbreaker 49-51 loss while the JV boy Panthers continue their 3-0 winning streak.
