A Rocky Mount man with pending court cases was arrested and charged Tuesday evening following a chase that began in the Enfield area, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Christopher Bakari Short, 26, faces charges of felony fleeing to elude arrest, conspiracy to sell/deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance, felony possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance, and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance.

A search by Sergeant D. Harrison and his canine, Loki, located 120 grams of marijuana at the scene off Highway 125 near J.S. Pope Road in Halifax, where the chase ended.

Major Anzell Harris said Corporal J. Morales was traveling north on Highway 301 just outside Enfield when he noticed a traffic violation around 8 p.m.

Morales attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and a chase ensued. Short traveled south on Highway 301, then turned and began to travel north on Highway 301. Short continued to flee until he stopped and abandoned the vehicle on Highway 125, where he left a passenger behind.

A short time later, a man later identified as Short was seen accepting a ride. The vehicle was stopped, and Short attempted to flee on foot but was caught.

Short was denied bail and has an August 12 disposition hearing, according to court records.

He has a probation violation from Halifax County, where he twice tested positive for THC — on March 9 and April 17. He was given 18 months of probation on February 4 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Court records show he has pending charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a weapon by a felon in Nash County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has also charged him with driving while his license was revoked due to a DWI. Court records show he has missed multiple court dates and failed to pay multiple fines.
