Enfield police Chief Jerry Shoemaker said Mayor Mondale Robinson is recovering after a crash that occurred in Maryland over the weekend.
“I spoke with him this morning,” the chief said. “He is in good spirits and has to go into surgery. He is looking forward to healing and getting back to serve the citizens of Enfield.”
Shoemaker said the crash occurred in Largo, Maryland in Prince George’s County.
In a post on the department’s Facebook page today the police department announced a Love Our Mayor Drive.
“Mayor Mondale Robinson needs our prayers as he goes into surgery this morning,” the post said. “Also for his absolute recovery. Let us all as a community come together in prayer for our Mayor Mondale Robinson.”
Anyone wishing to give to the Love our Mayor Drive is encouraged to bring all cards, gifts, and donations to the police department located at 115 Southeast Railroad Street between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 22. “We will take up any offerings of any size for eight business days … and make arrangements to deliver all gifts of love.”
"The mayor expresses his gratitude for the unwavering support from his family, friends and the entire community during this difficult time,” the town said in a statement sent to WRAL. “He requests that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he prepares for surgery.”
The town told the TV station that Robinson was treated for serious but survivable injuries in a trauma unit and spent time in intensive care but has since been moved to a private room.
The town said the crash was reported around 11:50 p.m Saturday when the mayor was on a rural road, hit a deer, overcorrected his steering and lost control of his car. The vehicle hit wet grass, crashing into a power line and a tree, the town told WRAL.
