Brenda Vincent, an RN at ECU Health North Hospital’s Post Anesthesia Care Unit, has been honored with the DAISY Award for her exceptional care and compassion.
She was nominated by a colleague who shared a heartfelt story of how she made a significant difference during a challenging time.
During the patient’s hospitalization, Brenda went above and beyond to provide compassionate care. She noticed a change on the patient’s monitor and, based on her experience across other hospital departments, recognized it as abnormal.
Acting quickly, she consulted the CRNA and surgeon, leading to further testing and treatment. Her attention to detail and critical thinking ensured the patient received timely care. “Brenda’s calm, caring approach eased the patient’s fears, highlighting the power of kindness and professionalism.”

“Compassion, dedication, and excellence — these are the qualities that define our extraordinary nurses,” said Christina Miller, vice president of Patient Care Services. “We celebrate Brenda Vincent whose unwavering commitment to patient care has earned her the prestigious DAISY Award. Their kindness and expertise make a profound difference in the lives of those they serve, and we are honored to have them as part of our ECU Health North Hospital family."
The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that celebrates the skillful and compassionate care nurses provide every day.
It was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999.
The Barnes family deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family during his hospitalization, and they founded the DAISY Foundation to publicly express their gratitude to nurses.
Vincent, who earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Halifax Community College in 1982, joined ECU Health North Hospital, formerly Halifax Memorial Hospital, 43 years ago.
Vincent attended Old Dominion University, receiving her BSN in 2002 and her MSN in 2003. “Brenda’s unwavering dedication and exceptional care have left a lasting impact on her patients,” ECU North said. “Her compassion, expertise, and commitment to their well-being continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives she touches.”
ECU Health recognizes DAISY Award winners each quarter.
Her colleagues, hospital leaders, and family surprised her with the DAISY Award Nurse certificate, pin, and a hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture known as A Healer’s Touch.
