Halifax County commissioners today approved fireworks permits for Fourth of July celebrations in Halifax, Hobgood, and Weldon.
The Halifax and Hobgood shows are scheduled for July 4 and the Weldon show is scheduled for July 5.
Deputy County Manager Christina Wells noted in a memo to the board that during the 2009 legislative session, the General Assembly passed a law aimed at preventing pyrotechnic disasters from occurring and anyone discharging them to attend a training course and earn an operator permit through the state fire marshal.
This permit allows the operator or assistant to conduct pyrotechnic operations throughout the state and is valid for three years. Both the pyrotechnics operator permit and a local permit from the county fire marshal are required to conduct a show. Shows must also be approved by commissioners.
Halifax Mayor John White in a letter to Sheriff Tyree Davis seeking assistance during the town’s celebration at the courthouse complex on Ferrell Lane said there will be a DJ playing a variety of music, various activities for children, and numerous vendors. The festivities begin around 6 p.m.
The Hobgood event begins at 6 p.m. at Friendship Park complex.
The Weldon event begins at 6 p.m. at River Falls Park.
