Roanoke Valley elementary students are invited to boost their summer activities and enhance their reading skills at an upcoming camp.
The Center for Energy Education will host a no-cost, weeklong reading and writing camp where rising second through sixth graders will experience lessons of reading and writing fundamentals.
Halifax and Northampton County youth are welcome to attend camp June 16-20, which will be held on the center’s campus at 460 Airport Road, Roanoke Rapids.
The camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Snacks and lunch will be provided.
A mother-daughter team with Halifax County roots will share their love of servant leadership to creatively build upon foundational reading and writing skills of the young participants.
Tammy Evans and Kayla Evans, a senior at St. Agnes Academy in Houston, Texas, will provide enrichment programming for rural communities.
The team also plans to encourage journaling as a complement to reading and writing competencies.
“I want to inspire a sense of community and belonging though literacy,” said Kayla Evans. “This summer camp is an extension of my after-school tutoring that allows me to share my love of learning.”
Community partners and special guests will also enhance the camp experience for participants.
