Heat index values of up to 115 are expected today and an extreme heat warning is in effect until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Dangerously hot and humid conditions will continue and can be deadly for those without effective cooling.
The NWS advises to drink lots of fluids, stay out of the sun, seek air conditioning or a cooling center if possible. Keep pets cool and check on relatives and neighbors.
On Thursday the heat index is expected to be only marginally less at up to 109.
Aside from the heat, there is a slight risk — level 2 of 5 — of severe thunderstorms today, mainly between 2 p.m. and midnight.
The primary hazard will be damaging downburst winds.
Halifax EMC
Meanwhile, Halifax EMC is encouraging its members to conserve energy this week by making small adjustments to their home energy use, including raising the set point of thermostats and delaying the use of large electric appliances until after 8 p.m.
These actions multiplied across thousands of households will help reduce demand for electricity at a time when extreme temperatures are causing demand to rise.
Being able to mitigate the sharp increase in demand for electricity keeps the grid reliable for all Halifax EMC members.
“Time and again, our members demonstrate their engagement on energy and community issues, and we are asking for their support again today,” said Julia Allsbrook, director of member services and community engagement. “If it is safe to do so, please consider raising the temperature of your thermostat by a few degrees and use fans to stay cool. Air conditioning is the single biggest contributor to high demand in the summer, and every degree makes a difference, especially between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.”
A few simple ways Halifax EMC members can lower their home energy use include:
Raise the set point of your thermostat by a few degrees, and close your blinds/draw the curtains during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun’s rays.
Delay the use of large appliances like dishwashers, washers, and dryers until after 8 p.m.
Cook with smaller appliances such as air fryers, slow cookers, toaster ovens, and microwaves
Turn off unnecessary lights, including outdoor lights and ambient lighting.
