Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday evening when occupants of two vehicles fired at each other along Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

Captain Harold Phillips said a vehicle that was parked and not involved in the shooting was damaged.

One person, an occupant in one of the vehicles, was injured during a subsequent crash that ended the shootout and was hospitalized. The person is in stable condition, Phillips said.

No names have been released in this report.

In a statement, Lieutenant Morgan Worrell said that shortly before 6:15 p.m., police began receiving multiple calls of shots being fired by the occupants of two vehicles.

The shooting started near the intersection of Julian R. Allsbrook and Highway 158 and continued west on 158.

The shooting continued until one of the vehicles ran off the road and into a wooded area at the intersection of Sam Powell Dairy Road and Highway 48.

Aside from the person injured in the car crash, there were no physical injuries as a result of the shooting.

Police are seeking assistance with information about a silver or champagne four-door Lexus sedan with tinted windows that was involved in the shooting. At this time, there is no license plate information.

A motive has not been established, and Worrell said further information will be released as the investigation progresses.

“This incident is inexcusable, as it placed so many lives of our citizens in danger,” Worrell said. “We cannot tolerate this behavior, and we need help from the community to hold those accountable who have no regard for the safety of our citizens.”
