One man surrendered this morning and his brother was apprehended following a chase that ended in a crash on Sam Powell Dairy Road Thursday night.
Major Anzell Harris said Halifax County Sheriff's Office Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin was patrolling in the Roanoke Rapids area of Highways 158 and 48 around 10 p.m. when he observed a traffic violation.
Martin would later identify the driver as 20-year-old Marquis Settles and the passenger as his brother, 22-year-old Sergio Settles, both of Littleton.
Martin began a traffic stop as Marquis turned onto Vine Street and sped up to 65 mph in the Roanoke Rapids city limits.
As Martin activated his blue lights and siren, Marquis fled onto Smith Church Road, then Highway 48, and finally to Sam Powell Dairy Road where speeds reached 120 mph.

Marquis Settles
Marquis crashed as he attempted to navigate a curve and the vehicle left the roadway.
The brothers fled into separate areas of the woods. Martin observed that Sergio had a firearm in his hands. Sergio complied with Martin’s command to drop the weapon but continued to flee.

Sergio Settles
Sergio was later apprehended and arrested while a search for Marquis was initially unsuccessful until his surrender this morning. Deputies learned later that he was picked up by a relative.
After further inspection of the firearm, Martin observed it to have a “switch” attachment converting the handgun to fully automatic.
Sergio was arrested and charged with felony possession of a machine gun and resisting a public officer. He received a $3,000 bond and a November 25 district court date. Detention center records show neither him nor his brother were still in custody as of this report.
Upon his surrender, Marquis was served warrants for felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, speeding, reckless driving to endanger, failure to heed light or siren, resisting a public officer, failure to stop at a stop sign, unsafe passing on a yellow line, unsafe passing on the crest or curve, and an equipment violation.
