After a remarkable career dedicated to education and community development, Claude "Clutch" Cooper, a beloved retired educator, has announced his candidacy for reelection to the Halifax County Board of Education for his fourth term.
With a deep-rooted commitment to empowering students, teachers, and families, Cooper's tenure in education has significantly shaped the Halifax County community.
A proud alumnus of Shaw University, where he earned a BS in mathematics with a minor in biology in 1969, Cooper began his educational journey in Halifax County that same year. Entrusted by Mr. Clem Williamson, the principal who recognized his potential and provided the necessary support to help him succeed, Cooper quickly made an impact as a math teacher and boys basketball coach at Inborden High School. His coaching prowess earned him "Coach of the Year" honors in his first year — a testament to his dedication and ability to inspire students.

Over the years, Cooper’s leadership evolved as he taught mathematics and coached basketball at Enfield High School and served nine years as an assistant principal at Enfield High and Southeast Halifax High School. His impressive coaching record, including being named "Coach of the Year" 14 times in 17 years, highlights his ability to foster talent and teamwork among his players.
For 23 years, Cooper served as principal at various schools, including Enfield Middle, Everetts Elementary, and WR Davie Middle Schools. His leadership was recognized through numerous awards, including "Principal of the Year" four times and runner-up on three occasions.
Cooper was instrumental in developing innovative educational programs, such as the "House Concept" for interdisciplinary teaching, Saturday Academy, and after-school tutorials, all of which contributed to the high acclaim received by the schools in the district. His efforts even caught the attention of the Governor during a school visit.
Beyond the classroom, Cooper actively participated in multiple educational and community committees, including serving as a PBIS trainer for North Carolina and vice president of the Roanoke River Conference.
Currently, he serves as vice chairman of the Halifax County Board of Education, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to improving education in the county.
Cooper's passion for the community extends beyond academics; he has dedicated 22 years as recreation director for the town of Enfield, where he developed sports programs that unite families and foster youth development.
Throughout his career, he has inspired pride and self-respect in countless children, reminding them, "Whatever you do, wherever you go, make your parents proud."
A family man at heart, Cooper is married to Linda Anderson and is a proud father of three college graduates — Cory, Lydia, and Erika — and a grandfather of four, including two college graduates and one college senior.
Cooper's values are deeply rooted in his upbringing in Corapeake, where education was held in high esteem despite the challenges of growing up in poverty. His belief in discipline and strong educational foundations has led to unparalleled success for his former students, including judges, an NBA player, and over 107 athletes who received scholarships.
As Cooper seeks reelection, he stands firm on his motto, "Education is my business — my only business."
His unwavering belief in teamwork and excellence has yielded high-performing schools that are a source of pride in Halifax County.
Cooper is ready to continue his mission for the betterment of all students, ensuring they receive the quality education they deserve.
