The suspect in the First Citizens bank shot himself tonight and was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center after he holed up in a house on Patsy Albritton Street.
Roanoke Rapids Police have not released the man’s name but apparently a red dye pack ink on Drake Street led investigators to the house at 1308 Patsy Albritton where the man allegedly broke in and forced a husband and wife into the attic.
One of the family members said the man broke in the back door. Officers surrounded the house and when a search warrant was delivered entered the house and got the couple out, shaken but otherwise OK.
At one point during the search it was believed the suspect was in the attic. Officers could be heard from the outside pounding inside the house.
When the man apparently shot himself, an EMS crew rushed inside with a stretcher to get him.
Police Chief Jeff Hinton said during the search the man believed to be the bank robbery suspect was discovered hiding in the house and shot himself.
His condition is currently unknown.
The man entered the bank earlier in the afternoon with a silver handgun and demanded money. He was given an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot. He was last seen running west on Drake Street heading to Georgia Avenue.
