The Weldon town board is calling on the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and district attorney’s office to request the SBI open a special investigation into the murder of Susan Shearin Clary.

Clary, a tax collector and assistant clerk for the town, was murdered May 16, 1983, a 20-year-old whose unborn son, Chad Ray Clary, also died.

“Time is of the essence,” part of the resolution read by Mayor Julia Meacham said before giving the document to Clary’s mother, Maurice Shearin.

Shearin quietly thanked the mayor.

“We do hope this will be of benefit to bringing this to justice,” Meacham said.

The cause of her death was asphyxiation secondary to strangulation.

In another resolution, the town declared April 26 as Charlie Beaver Day, in honor of the host of WPTM’s Good Morning Lake Country Show as he enters his 29th year on the show.
