For the first time, Halifax County citizens can pay traffic tickets and related costs online. A new system, payNCticket, built by the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts, allows citizens to make online payments via credit or debit card for most traffic citations that can be waived.
Overall, North Carolina courts handle the payment of more than half a million offense citations (including traffic) that can be waived per year.
In fiscal year 2008-2009, more than 644,000 of these offense citations were paid in the state, 7521 of which were in Halifax County.
Before payNCticket, Halifax County citizens had to pay fines and related court costs at the courthouse or by mail.
This system provides immediate benefits to citizens and to court officials and staff. While it provides a more convenient payment option for citizens, the system also allows quicker disposition of cases due to automatic updates of case records, and reduces the workload of cashiers and clerks at courthouses around the state. Overall, payNCticket results in less courthouse traffic and decreases wait times for citizens of Halifax County who still wish to pay their fees in person.
“NCPay Ticket was implemented in our county on May 6,” said Clerk of Superior Court, Becky Spragins. “This is going to be a much more efficient way for people to pay their tickets without having to leave home.”
“As the first online citation payment system available to Halifax County, payNCticket.org will automate payment processes and improve overall courthouse procedures in Halifax County,” says Judge John W. Smith, NCAOC director. “PayNCticket.org is a major step toward increasing the state’s court system’s online capacities and meeting the technological needs of citizens.”
PayNCticket is being rolled out county-by-county throughout the state. All counties are expected to be using the system by late summer.
Payments made using this new online system will be processed by NIC, a company that provides eGovernment services that lead to increased efficiencies and reduced costs for governments and their constituents.
