Lieutenant Chuck Hasty of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following:
• A Roanoke Rapids man was arrested Wednesday night after he ran from a deputy and allegedly threw 19 grams of crack cocaine on the ground.
Deputy Chris High was on routine patrol when he spotted Semaj Montague Sledge in a vehicle. High had outstanding warrants on Sledge, who is 19.
When High turned around to follow vehicle, the driver made an abrupt turn on Redwood Street and then into a private driveway. When High approached the passenger got out of the vehicle and ran away.
High caught and arrested Sledge and recovered 19 grams of crack cocaine.
Sledge was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, resisting, delaying, obstructing a public officer and served with the outstanding orders for arrest. Sledge was jailed on $102,015 bond and has a June 9 court date.
He was wanted as an absconder from Probation and Parole and was on probation for possession with intent to sell cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• Deputy Matt Brown acted on some information he received about a wanted person from Durham staying in the Enfield area.
Brown arrested Cedric LaKeith Hawkins, 34, of Durham, for assault on a female, assault by strangulation and harassing phone calls.
Brown turned Hawkins over to the Durham Police Department.
• High and Steven Casey stopped a vehicle on Julian Allsbrook Road in Roanoke Rapids.
While investigating the vehicle equipment violation, Casey noticed part of a gun stuffed down in the pocket of the passenger seat.
Casey arrested Alphonso Williams Jr., 21, of Halifax, for carrying a concealed weapon. Williams had a $750 bond and a court date of June 30.
