A man who allegedly fled Thursday after being caught inside a West Tenth Street home following a breaking and entering was arrested soon after the call.

Lieutenant Bobby Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call around 11:15 a.m. in the Frog Level community that the victim came home for lunch and found a man in her living room.

“Within minutes Sergeant Randy Keaton, Deputy Danny Radford and Deputy Charlie Jenkins arrived on the scene,” Martin said. “Information provided by the victim was transmitted to the other deputies in route. Within minutes the entire area had been surrounded by deputies.”

A man fitting the description was located by Deputy Fred Whitaker and Deputy Willie Murphy just a few blocks from the scene, walking on West Tenth Street. Further investigation confirmed that 18-year-old Kehaad Hawkins of Roanoke Rapids was the suspect. He was taken into custody by Deputy Whitaker.

Through further investigation it was learned that the same suspect was allegedly involved in another breaking and entering on Bishop Road.

Martin said when officers went to the home of the suspect there was stolen property located from the previous breaking and entering.

The victim from the Bishop Road crime was contacted and was able to identify the property.

Detective James Matthews charged Hawkins with two felony counts of breaking and entering, felony larceny after breaking and entering and felony possession of stolen property.

A Halifax County magistrate set Hawkins’ bond at $20,000. He has a June 30 court date.
