Halifax County commissioners today supported a resolution endorsing the June 19 fly in for the Dallas Jones Roanoke Valley Veterans Center.

David L. Johnson, a retired Air Force general who is coordinating the fly in at the Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport, told commissioners today the event is a way to recognize veterans and to support the center, located in Becker Village Mall

“Planning is well under way,” Johnson said, adding later, “It’s a fitting way to honor the sacrifice and service of our veterans.”

Gates open at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.

There will be military airplanes and helicopters on display and a World War II re-enactor encampment, as well as military and aviation vendors.

There will be the opportunity to sit in Vietnam War-era helicopters, sponsored by the N.C. Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.

There will be radio-controlled large-scale war birds along with inflatable games on site for the children’s entertainment.

There will be ping pong and Easter egg drops to win prizes and airplane rides.

A large number of local vendors will be selling such items as barbecue sandwiches, funnel cakes, popcorn, shaved ice, pretzels, baskets of potatoes, bowls of salad, bakery-style cakes and muffins, hotdogs, nachos and more.The Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau will provide a complimentary shuttle from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to take passengers from the fly in grounds to visit the Dallas Jones Roanoke Valley Veterans Center located at Becker Village Mall, and return to the fly in.For more information, contact Ralph Johnson, airport manager, at 252-583-3492.

In another matter today commissioners heard a report from Economic Development Director Cathy Scott. In the report Scott noted the following:

• Halifax Corporate Park: Contract for engineering with Green Engineering is under way, a groundbreaking is being scheduled and grant resources for development are being completed.

• Reser’s expansion: Army Corps has issued 404 permit under the Clean Water Management Act, state Division of Water Quality has approved storm water plans, new road construction nearing completion and construction is under way.

• Project Clean Fuel: Letter of intent negotiated between county and the company.

• Project Peridot: Meeting with company officials held on May 5 and May 26.

• Project Box: Company moving forward with technology development focused on Enfield area.

• Grocery projects: Developer working with two grocery store projects in Enfield and Weldon.

• Wood fuel project: Company interested in Enfield site remains strong.

• Biotechnology project: Nationally recognized company visited county on May 6, followup visit on May 11 and work on letter of intent continues.

• Manufacturer of light sport aircraft visited old airport on May 19.

Scott declined to elaborate on the projects.
