The family of Karl Besas, whose body was recovered from Lake Gaston Wednesday, released the following statement today: “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our beautiful, beloved son Karl. We would like to thank each and every agency, volunteer and individual for their tireless efforts during the search. We can’t express enough our thanks for the overwhelming love and support we have received during this tragic time.
"Karl was a wonderful son and brother and was loved by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. He touched us all and will be greatly missed.”
Besas had been missing since Saturday and his body was recovered around 1:30 p.m.
Lieutenant Chuck Hasty of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Besas was recovered by Littleton Fire Department members.
Dive Teams from around the Roanoke Valley and Virginia conducted an extensive search since Saturday.
Detective Tyree Davis said the investigation is still open at this time pending an autopsy report which Hasty said was requested by the family and law enforcement.
