The state Highway Patrol has ruled out environmental and vehicle causes in an August 27 crash that killed a 65-year-old Garysburg woman.

Sergeant Eric Shaberg said that leaves only a human factor which led to the death of Margaret McNair Squire.

Squire was still accelerating when she ran off the road and managed to clear two trees before the car she was driving went up a 90-foot incline and struck the abutment of the overpass in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 at the Highway 481 exit.

Shaberg estimated the car was traveling between 40 to 45 miles per hour before it struck the abutment.

What happened to Squire, however, will remain a mystery, the sergeant said today. “It’s pure speculation on the human element, the human side it is. We hate it happened. We feel for the family.”

Shaberg said there was no other vehicle involved and nothing wrong with the car Squire was driving.

The wreck occurred shortly before 1:45 p.m. and Squire’s granddaughter was injured. Shaberg said the granddaughter doesn’t know what happened.
