Three people were arrested Thursday, one who was shot by the victim in the leg, and a gun recovered today following an attempted armed robbery on Reese’s Store Road.
The attempted robbery occurred shortly before 1:45 p.m. when the victims, who sitting in a swing and chair under a carport, were approached by two armed men who demanded money.
Lieutenant Bobby Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the victim’s son was able to escape and dash inside the house and grab a gun. The victim fired at the two men and one was struck in the leg. “He was lucky that he was able to get away at all,” he said of the victim.
The men got to a getaway vehicle and fled but were met on Blue Sky Road by Deputy Charlie Jenkins, who had a description. Jenkins stopped the vehicle.
Two people inside were described as those allegedly involved in the attempt and one appeared to have a gunshot wound. The third suspect fled but was picked up later in the evening.
Today deputies and the Central Region Prison Emergency Response Team went back to the scene to look for weapons possibly thrown from the car.
With assistance from Corporal Chris Buffaloe and his dog Tyson of the Weldon Police Department, a double barrel shotgun described by the victims was found in the ditch on Reese’s Store Road by PERT member Tarry Rudd.
No further weapons were found in that search, but on Blue Sky Road, PERT members Tarry Rudd, Willey Phillips, Reginald Benthall and Gregory Leggett found a 12-gage pump action shotgun in a ditch. “Without their help there would still be a gun out there a child could have picked up,” Martin said. “The Central Region PERT Bravo Company was a tremendous asset in the search of these two areas. The group search hard and diligently and located two weapons that could have been picked up by someone else. The help of Chris Buffaloe and Tyson was tremendous also.”
Martin said investigation shows the robbery attempted was preplanned but he would not elaborate further. Investigation continues.
