The Weldon town board tonight recognized the retirement of Donald Crowder, the public utilities director for the past 24 years.

In the resolution read by Mayor Julia Meacham, it was noted Crowder began his career with the town in April of 1982 as a water plant operator. His retirement was effective January 1 but he will continue to work part time.

"During his years of dedicated service to the town of Weldon, Donald L. Crowder has proven to be a valued employee and has demonstrated a willingness to do much more than what was required of him," the resolution says, "To time and again give the extra effort that was necessary to accomplish what had to be done."

Following the presentation, in which he also received a plaque, Crowder said, "It's been an honor and privilege to serve the town and its residents. I took pride in serving the town."

In other matters tonight the board:

Approved a request by Andy Whitby to connect two restrooms at 200 Washington Avenue to an existing water source.

Last year, Whitby said in a letter to the town, he made repairs and improvements and attracted the restaurant Sonny's to the building.

He said he wants to further develop the property by converting the garage bays into small retail or office spaces and has a prospect lined up.

Were told by fire Chief Rusty Bolt a major drill in which a mountain of palettes will be burned will be held February 12 and 13 at 121 Watkins Drive. The drill will help firefighters become familiar with incident command and several other areas putting out fires.
