An 18-year-old Henrico man died following a single vehicle crash on Thelma Road Thursday night.

Trooper J.D. Warren of the state Highway Patrol said Cody Gainey was about 2 miles outside Roanoke Rapids headed into town when he lost control of his 1995 Honda Civic around 9:30 p.m.

The car ran off the shoulder of the road and overturned several times in a field before Gainey, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

He was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville where he later died.

Warren said it appears excessive speed contributed to the wreck, which occurred on a straightaway just before the bad curve at Shearin Baptist Church.

Warren said he will continue his investigation this evening to determine how fast the vehicle was going. He said skid marks on the highway show where Gainey lost control.

Gainey's driving information listed his address as Henrico but family said he was staying with his mother in Emporia.

Alcohol use is not suspected, Warren said.
