A woman wanted in a May check fraud scheme was arrested Sunday in Garysburg, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Detective J. Puhak said Leona Velma Putney, 45, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with one count of felony larceny of checks, three counts of forgery of an instrument, three counts of uttering a forged instrument and three counts of larceny.

The arrest came after the sheriff's office received a report in May that a Halifax County resident's checking account had been defrauded of an undisclosed amount of money.

On Sunday Puhak received information that Putney was possibly hiding at a house in the Doe Drive area of Garysburg.

With assistance from Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy D. Carter, Putney was located and arrested with the help of Sergeant J. Pair and officers M. Garner, J. Turner and L. Clements.

Putney was jailed on $25,000 bond and has a June 29 court date.
