rrspin.com has launched a beta version Android application and will also be launching a new section on the website beginning March 1.

The application can be found by going to the Android Market.

Beaufort Community College instructor Ken Robol’s Web 187 class designed it.

Robol is a former Halifax Community College instructor and recently assigned students to design mobile applications for local business to introduce them to a new market. “Smart phones are becoming extremely popular in the United States,” Robol said. “Android and iPhone are the two most popular phone makers followed by Blackberry and then Windows 7 phones.”

The work done on the rrspin application will go in student portfolios. “Students need a portfolio for the real world and doing an application for rrspin is a great opportunity.”

Robol said, “An upcoming challenge is showing business and community leaders how important applications are becoming and how they need one for their organization.”

Bill Prochues was assigned to complete the rrspin project. “He did a great job,” said Robol.

The application is currently awaiting approval on the iPhone market and Robol encourages any business looking for a similar application to contact him. “Students are always looking for the next project and I would encourage rrspin readers to contact me if they need a student for their application.”

Other Voices, Other Rooms

Meanwhile, rrspin.com is launching a new feature beginning March 1 called Other Voices, Other Rooms.

The name is a nod to singer and songwriter Nanci Griffith’s 1993 album, which was named after the Truman Capote novel.

“Other Voices, Other Rooms is your opportunity to say what’s on your mind in a column format much like our opinion page,” website Editor and Publisher Lance Martin said. “It is a place where you can discuss your thoughts on current issues whether local, state or national or tell us what is going on in your neighborhood or community. It is a place where you can talk about life’s daily joys or annoyances or say what’s right and wrong with the world.”

It is also a place where submitted content that doesn’t fit within the news pages of rrspin.com will go.

Content must be written in proper sentences with no text message or Internet abbreviations or emoticons. No poetry or short stories unless the aim is to satirize a current situation or issue. All pieces will run at the editor’s discretion and must be signed with the author’s real name with a telephone number for verification. Your phone number will not be published. To submit your piece, simply email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
