A pizza delivery driver was shot and killed early this morning in the Branch Avenue area of Roanoke Rapids.

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement the driver, 21-year-old James Anthony Lee Jr., had been out for a delivery but hadn’t checked with his employer for some time, causing concern.

It was Lee’s employer who found the Weldon man in the Branch Avenue area, the sheriff said in the statement.

The employer notified law enforcement shortly before 1 a.m.

Tripp said this morning the time Lee went on the delivery is being investigated. Whether the driver was robbed is also under investigation, the sheriff said.

Tripp declined comment on whether the driver was shot inside or outside the vehicle as well the type of weapon used.

Investigation continues, Tripp said in the statement, and anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 252-583-8201 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
