An alternative proposal involving the Roanoke Rapids Theatre is on the table, Mayor Emery Doughtie confirmed following a nearly two-hour closed session this evening.

Doughtie would not disclose whether the deal does or does not involve Lafayette Gatling, who thus far has not moved on his proposal to buy the venue.

Doughtie said discussions on this development are still in the early stages.

Bill White, a local attorney, was ushered into the closed session, which began at 5 p.m., shortly before 6 p.m. He and Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon, whose department is overseeing operations of the theater, left the closed session shortly before 6:45 p.m.

Before going into the closed session, White said he was there to represent a client. He declined, however, to discuss whom the client is.

Doughtie declined to discuss specifics of the proposal.
