A Roanoke Rapids woman was arrested and charged this afternoon on opium trafficking counts.
Captain A.M. Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement it took several attempts to locate Maria Faison Barbrey in the areas of Littleton and Roanoke Rapids.
The 39-year-old woman surrendered to agents at the sheriff’s office shortly after 4 this afternoon.
Harris said Agent D.K. Newsome investigated two cases involving Barbrey after receiving information she was selling pills.
During the first investigation she sold 17 dosage units of hydrocodone and on the second 20 dosage units to a cooperating source when she lived in the 1000 block of Highway 903.
She faces charges of two counts each of trafficking opium, possession with intent to sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance, sell schedule II, deliver schedule II and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.
She received a $10,000 bond with an August 21 court date.

Medicine drop
Today at Walgreens the sheriff’s office sponsored a medicine drop.
Agents collected 14 pounds of medication, which will be disposed of properly.
