Storm drainage systems became overwhelmed in a short time this morning, leaving serious flooding across Roanoke Rapids.
In some cases, according to Public Works Director Larry Chalker, water is waist deep and children are to be kept away from playing in it. “These are flood waters, not puddles,” he said, explaining there is danger of getting swept away by the current.
One of the big areas of concern is at Henry Street Apartments and 12th Street. The Becker Drive Extension, usually a huge problem area for flooding, is “looking pretty good,” Chalker said, as the city and state Department of Transportation have been working together to solve issues there.
As of this interview, the public works department has not seen any damage although there is the possibility water could have entered dwellings or businesses.
Chalker said there were reports of funnel two funnel clouds but there is no proof they touched down.
A spot check by rrspin.com in areas where the funnel clouds were reported showed no evidence of any damage.
Chalker urges anyone who encounters standing water while driving to turn around.
