A child died from injuries sustained in a wreck Friday morning that began when a motorist hit a bear on Interstate 95.
The collision with the bear caused three wrecks, the third crash being the one in which the child was initially injured and later died Sunday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
The child’s name was not immediately available this morning as Trooper T.C. Wood of the state Highway Patrol continues to investigate. It is not believed the 2-month-old child is from the area.
Names of those involved are also not available.
The initial report shows there was a collision in which a motorist struck a 500-pound bear near the 160-mile marker in the Enfield area.
That crash caused a second wreck most likely from rubbernecking. The third crash, in which six vehicles were involved and the child was initially injured, was caused by a tractor-trailer.
The driver of the rig, whose name was not immediately available, was charged with DWI and felony injury.
The state Highway Patrol will be getting with the Halifax County District Attorney’s office to discuss possibly upgrading the charges in the wake of the child’s death.
The charges against the truck driver, who is from New Jersey, reflect alcohol use and inattention.
The child was properly restrained, the initial report indicates.
