Skeletal remains found Sunday appear to be those of a black female who was 35 to 50 at the time of her death, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported this morning.

Chief Deputy Wes Tripp said that information is based on preliminary findings from the Medical Examiner’s office in Greenville.

Height is between 5 feet, 1 inch to 5 feet, 5 inches tall. Clothing found on the remains includes a heavy black coat, light colored jeans, black tennis shoes and sunglasses.

Tripp said in a news release early investigation suggests the remains are those of a transient or homeless person who may have set up a makeshift camp, using the railroad trestle off Highway 561 in Halifax as a shelter.

Based on evidence at the scene and the report from the medical examiner there is nothing to suggest foul play.

Tripp said investigators believe the person may have been dead a year but are awaiting further information from the medical examiner to determine exactly how long.

“We’re asking for any information and looking into missing person files,” Tripp said. “We’re getting calls from other agencies.”

Tripp said based on what investigators know thus far the county has no missing person report fitting the description of the skeletal remains.
